I didn’t expect much from it other than “war is horrible” and “the germans were evil” and that’s pretty much what we get. In showing terrible brutality and suffering, it avoids dealing with the really scary aspects of war such as one gets from an exhibit like the one labelled “ A Monstrous Mediocrity ” over at Suicide of the West. However, one thing the movie shares with that exhibit is a Nazi soldier taking some snapshots with a personal camera. I also re-watched some of the interviews on the Commissar bonus materials DVD. One thing I had somehow missed was that Alexandr Aksoldov was kicked out of the Communist party twice. The second time was under Perestroika, when most other banned films were being released. His was not. The reaction to the proposal was to instead kick him out of the party again and bring up old charges against him. Raisa Nedashkovskaya’s interview made me put Commissar back in my Netflix queue for viewing sooner rather than later. I remember the scene she was talking about, but I didn’t realize it featured an interweaving of Russian and Jewish lullabies. She sings both of them nicely, but I want to see (hear) again how it was done in the film.

The movie is really good. @krownkirrer if you've seen the film and still consider it to be propaganda i guess you're a really stupid person. in no way does the film defend the soviet union or the values of communism its a cooment on war and the atrocities that follow the dehumanization of the soldiers. exactly which part of the film did you feel worked as propaganda.

Wow, opening with Godspeed. Funny that that also happens to be how quick I went to the like button. Best war film ever made. Wow. This film was the best depiction of War I've seen so far, in no way at all did this film glamorize it, if anything it gave the audience the closest look into what a country under attack goes through. Unlike other war films Come and See really depicted the life's of ordinary civilians in the time of war. The small town of Russia were Flor was from resembled the country itself, it was micro-cosmic view of the point of view of the Russians during world war II. The director Elem Klimov did an amazing job in getting the audience involved with almost your five senses, we can practically smell old meat when the cow that Flor was trying to take to the group dies for example. The sound of the constant Nazi planes watching over haunted us as much as Flor. I was recently part of a house fire and the scene when the German officers terrorize the Russian city and burn the building with all the townspeople was unforgettable, it gave me chills to remember my own close experience with the fire but seeing it in this film took it to another level. A few minutes ago before the fire we got to see the inside full with people who had done nothing wrong. The flames were no CGI which made the scene that much more intense.
One of my favorite scenes was when Flor finally got to use his gun that he carried through out the film, poor kid he had started out so cheerful and full of joy to become a soldier but to his dismay war was nothing like he thought it'd be. Like we said in class, he started off looking 13 years and ended the film as a 40 year old. The reason I really loved that scene was because it had so many images and symbols in one scene, to me it really summarized WW II. Going back through time every important step that lead to Hitler in power was so powerfully showed, with Flor shooting many times at Hitlers picture at the same time. Much like life if one of those things had gone slightly wrong it would have made a world of a difference. But at the same time it made me think that even if it wasn't Adolfo Hitler, maybe it was have been someone else? If his mom would have had that abortion, and had another child what guarantees it wouldn't have been that other child to become the next "Htiler" the world is full of crazy lunatics, but it is our job as society to try and stop them. Going back through time with Flor in that scene really for me showed All the people that could have Stoped it before it happened!
I'm sad to know this film isn't as known as it should be and deserves to be! I'm glad to see all of us who commented really inspired us to write a review and share our thoughts about this incredible film.

"Come and See" directed by Elem Klimov documents Nazi Germany's assault on Russia during World War II. The story centers around a young boy named Florya who has a dream-like idea about being a soldier and fighting for Russia, but his ideas of war are shattered when he gets a taste of the utter truths of what the war can entail. After seeing his family dead, he is utterly distraught and knows he cannot contain this child mentality of war anymore. We can see Florya age dramatically through the course of film, even though he is still the same boy from the beginning of the film. The experience has truly caused him to age and change and for the audience to get a new look at him at the movie's end. "Come and See" is truly an assault on our five senses, capturing the realistic feel in all aspects. Klimov does a fine job capturing the essence of the brutality of the war with little violence. Movies like "Saving Private Ryan" documents more violence, blood, and SGI then actually capturing the true emotion and hardship. "Come and See" really focuses on emotion and the horrors of war. The scene which really is special is when Florya finally fires his gun to have a sort of epiphany and realization. Going backwards in the scene really makes it more captivating. Any of these events could be stopped if Hitler did not exist or was killed before he could let the horrendous events of the Hollacaust unfold. I really recommend this movie to truly reveal what the war is really about and how psychologically damaging it could be.

I remember watching this one night (late) on Bravo when they used to show all kinds of strange and usually foreign movies. This was about a year after it came out (1989. Stayed up to watch it all. Pretty disturbing movie but then again, what about war isn't.
This is the best film about 2nd war in all cinema history ever. Of course made for order, but the production year 1985 is striking. Posed a direct question: kill a defenseless child knowing what will grow from it? Damn strong.
I. actually didn't know that Come and See actually made it into the world. In. one way or another. This movie is a must-watch for any 'Murica won WW2 specimen.

Hugo Chávez con nuevo equipo económico

En plena tormenta por la crisis eléctrica y la devaluación del bolívar, el presidente venezolano, Hugo Chávez, remodela su Gabinete. Durante su mensaje anual a la Asamblea Nacional este viernes (madrugada del sábado en España), el mandatario desveló la designación de Alí Rodríguez Araque como nuevo ministro de Energía, en sustitución del recién destituido Ángel Rodríguez por la mala gestión de los cortes eléctricos en Caracas, pero además informó de su decisión de fusionar el Ministerio de Planificación con el de Finanzas en un único departamento que será dirigido por Jorge Giordani.

El pasado miércoles por la noche, cinco minutos antes de que se cumpliera el primer día de racionamiento de electricidad en la capital decretado por el Gobierno, Chávez se vio obligado a suspender la medida e informó de que había pedido la renuncia a su ministro del ramo, Ángel Rodríguez, tras el caos desatado en Caracas por los cortes de energía.

En su discurso ante el Parlamento, de casi cinco horas, Chávez afirmó que la "sequía es la única razón" del racionamiento eléctrico que se aplica en toda Venezuela con excepción de Caracas. Y reconoció que, en el caso del plan que se implementó el miércoles en la capital, que generó confusión y descontento entre la población y diversos sectores económicos, estuvo "pésimamente ejecutada". También admitió un "manejo ineficiente" de la crisis energética que afecta al país, que la oposición achaca a la falta de inversión en infraestructuras por parte del Estado. Según las cifras oficiales, el déficit eléctrico alcanza actualmente los 1.700 megavatios y el plan de racionamiento nacional busca ahorrar unos 1.600 megavatios.

Subida del salario mínimo

Chávez anunció también a la Asamblea un aumento del 25% del salario mínimo, actualmente de 967 bolívares (371,9/224,8 dólares). La medida se aplicará en dos tramos: el primero, del 10%, el próximo 1 de marzo, y el 15% restante el 1 de septiembre.

El presidente se refirió además a la polémica devaluación de la moneda nacional decretada el pasado lunes, que instaura un nuevo esquema cambiario con dos tasas controladas, de 2,6 y 4,3 bolívares por dólar, lo que significa una devaluación de 20,9 y 100% respecto a la tasa única anterior de 2,15 bolívares. Chávez defendió la medida, que según la oposición generará más inflación, explicando que es "una devaluación revaluadora" que dará más fortaleza al bolívar.

Contra el "imperio"

La comparecencia del mandatario comenzó con un minuto de silencio por las víctimas del terremoto en Haití y, acto seguido, Chávez inició su discurso con un repaso a la política internacional centrado en sus habituales críticas contra el "imperio yanquí" y el capitalismo. La raza humana está "en extinción" a causa de la "espantosa perversión" que constituye el capitalismo, afirmó el presidente mientras defendía el "socialismo bolivariano" como única alternativa de salvación. "Acabemos con el capitalismo y se salvará la raza humana", dijo.

Gran parte de sus ataques fueron para la actuación del Gobierno del presidente estadounidense, Barak Obama, al que volvió a calificar de "enigma" que "se había desmoronado" con el paso de los meses. "Hemos visto, nosotros sin asombro, pero buena parte del mundo con asombro, cómo EE.UU. apoyó el golpe de estado en Honduras", manifestó al aludir al derrocamiento del presidente hondureño Manuel Zelaya, el 28 de junio de 2009.

Denunció también lo que llamó "las siete puñaladas sobre América del Sur", en referencia al acuerdo entre Bogotá y Washington que permitirá a EE UU usar hasta siete bases militares en territorio colombiano, lo que constituye, en su opinión, una amenaza para Venezuela. Y volvió a acusar al "imperio", como llama a Estados Unidos, de impulsar la campaña mediática contra "los pueblos que se levantan" en el continente latinoamericano.

Como remate, Chávez saludó al nuevo nuncio apostólico en Venezuela, Pietro Parolin, presente entre los embajadores que acudieron al hemiciclo, al que sugirió hacer un "exorcismo" en la nunciatura por haber dado asilo durante dos años al opositor Nixon Moreno, acusado por la justicia venezolana de agresión a una mujer policía.

!Haití ya no existe!

Cualquier cifra de muertos es falsa. Para que el número de víctimas del terremoto de Haití se acercara algo a la realidad harían falta dos cosas. La primera es que alguien los hubiera contado, supiera cuánta gente estaba comprando a las cinco de la tarde del martes en el supermercado Caribe o cuántos niños de hasta cinco años durmiendo la siesta o jugando en la guardería Le Petit Prince. Pero nadie lo sabe.

Tampoco nadie ha contado cuántos cadáveres han sido quemados ya en las esquinas o cuántos continúan abandonados en medio de las calles -el reportero perdió este sábado la cuenta al llegar a 20 tras la primera media hora de recorrido por el centro de Puerto Príncipe-.

 La segunda cuestión necesaria es que aquí, en este país antes llamado Haití, hubiese algún tipo de autoridad, municipal o estatal, que tras el seísmo se hubiese hecho cargo de la situación. Pero Haití ya no existe. Su capital sólo es ya un inmenso cementerio en ruinas por el que pasean sin saber hacia dónde millones de personas convertidas en vagabundos.

Ivania y sus dos hijas forman parte de ese ejército silencioso. Al pasar por la puerta de la morgue privada La vida eterna se tapan la nariz con sus camisetas. Seis cadáveres sin siquiera cubrir se agolpan en el garaje sin rejas de la funeraria. Uno más está tirado en plena acera.

Después de cuatro días al raso, tal vez sea mejor no describir su estado ni el olor que desprenden. Dicen los vecinos con naturalidad que los cuerpos están ahí porque ya dentro no caben más. Ivette se santigua y relata: "Esta ropa que llevo puesta y estas dos hijas que me acompañan son todo lo que tengo. De mis otros cinco hijos no he vuelto a saber desde el día del terremoto". Cuando se le pregunta adónde se dirige, Ivania responde lo que todos: "No sé. A intentar buscar algo de comida. Hace días que no he probado nada".

Todo el mundo habla del número probable de muertos, del último niño rescatado milagrosamente por un bombero europeo que sale sonriente en los telediarios o de la inminente llegada de Hillary Clinton y de sus 10.000 soldados. Pero nadie habla de esa riada interminable de mujeres y hombre silenciosos que deambulan como sonámbulos por una ciudad que, mal que bien, era la suya. Sabían a dónde dirigirse cuando tenían un problema de tráfico, o de salud, o cuando querían comprar un medicamento o un pantalón para sus hijos.

 Ya nada de eso es posible. El terremoto se llevó hasta el último resquicio de vida cotidiana. Lo hizo en menos de un minuto, pero con una eficacia mayor que muchos meses de bombardeo. Tampoco están las autoridades. Ninguna. La última imagen del presidente René Preval es la de un hombre que balbuceaba ante las cámaras, sin corbata y con los pantalones sucios, que había tenido que abrirse paso entre cadáveres, eso dijo, y que esa noche, la primera tras el terremoto, no sabía dónde iba a dormir. Pero ya han pasado cuatro días con sus noches y nadie sabe a ciencia cierta dónde está Preval ni quién manda en Haití. Tal vez no se sabe porque ya no manda a nadie. O porque, como dice Bernard, un funcionario haitiano que acompañó al reportero en su recorrido por Puerto Príncipe, "el país ha desaparecido, Haití ya no existe".

Sólo existen cadáveres y gente que anda, y niños rotos que lloran toda la noche junto a la tapia del hotel, fundiéndose su dolor con el sueño, con las imágenes repetidas de los cadáveres sin sepultura. Lo que queda de Haití se resume en los carteles improvisados que, en francés y en inglés, van apareciendo en las calles. Dicen: "Necesitamos ayuda". Pero nadie parece leerlos, porque cuatro días después del terremoto la ayuda internacional sigue siendo una anécdota, gestos de buena voluntad descoordinados, sobrepasados, impotentes.

 Son dos bomberos franceses llegados de Niza que solos y sudorosos introducen una y otra vez sus cuerpos por el esqueleto de un edificio que ya ha arrojado 20 cadáveres. Son unas enfermeras belgas que hacen lo que pueden ante una avalancha de gente que implora un calmante para sus hijos. La misma avalancha que se agolpa ante la puerta de una base militar controlada por la ONU cercana al aeropuerto. Son personas enfermas y heridas que quieren acceder al hospital de campaña instalado allí.

Una mujer con muletas, otra con la cabeza vendada, una tercera apoyada en otra más joven, probablemente su hija. El guarda de la puerta va a dejarles entrar, pero un soldado de la ONU llega entonces, se interpone entre la veintena de heridos y el guarda y grita:

-No deje entrar más heridos.

El del fusil obedece y cierra la puerta. Luego, como si su actitud necesitara de una explicación, el soldado de la ONU dice: "Es que ya no hay más medicamentos". Hasta este sábado al menos, la ayuda internacional sólo era buena voluntad y poco más. Su imagen más gráfica es la de un camión lleno de bomberos de Los Ángeles con sus trajes azules impolutos y sus cascos amarillos relucientes varados en medio de un caos de tráfico, de gente que quiere huir del infierno en autobuses atestados. De un infierno que empezó a perder la calma. Se escucharon tiros en el centro de la ciudad. En una calle que antes era comercial y ahora es el decorado imposible de una película de dolor y miedo.

WASHINGTON.- El presidente Barack Obama, quien alabó la "extraordinaria generosidad" de Estados Unidos con Haití, anunció hoy el establecimiento del "Fondo Clinton-Bush" para coordinar el envío de las ayudas de individuos y corporaciones al país caribeño y asegurar que se realice rápido y con seguridad.

Obama hizo estas declaraciones tras reunirse hoy en la Casa Blanca con sus colegas los ex presidentes Bill Clinton y George W. Bush, con quienes analizó los esfuerzos que se desarrollan en Haití para paliar la gran crisis humanitaria que padecen los haitianos por el terremoto.

Los ex presidentes, según explicó Obama, tendrán la tarea de alentar las contribuciones de individuos, corporaciones, organizaciones no gubernamentales y otras instituciones que deseen colaborar con Haití.

El mandatario estadounidense explicó que este esfuerzo es de alguna forma similar al que el presidente Bush llevó a cabo con Bush padre y el propio Clinton, tras el tsunami que se registró en Asia en 2004.

Los tres presidentes destacaron las enormes proporciones de la crisis que el terremoto del martes ha desatado en Haití y se comprometieron a continuar su trabajo en favor del pueblo haitiano a largo plazo.

Obama reconoció que el esfuerzo que se requiere será "extraordinario", pero afirmó que la gravedad de la situación en el país caribeño así lo requiere.

En su opinión, este fondo contribuirá a demostrar al mundo "el espíritu del pueblo de EE.UU." y reiteró que el que se lleva a cabo en Haití es uno de los mayores esfuerzos humanitarios de la historia de Estados Unidos.

El ex presidente Bush dijo, por su parte, que la mejor forma en la que EE.UU. puede colaborar con Haití es "enviando dinero".

Reconoció que hay gente que quiere mandar mantas y alimentos, pero insistió en que "envíen dinero porque las organizaciones sobre el terreno sabrán usarlo sabiamente".

Bush recalcó que los "retos allí son inmensos", pero también dijo que hay "mucha gente dedicada" para ayudar a las tareas de rescate y expresó su confianza en que el pueblo de Haití "se recuperará y logrará reconstruirse".

A su vez, Bill Clinton destacó "la extraordinaria respuesta del Gobierno de Estados Unidos" a esta crisis y aunque por ahora lo que urge es la entrega de agua, alimentos, medicinas y el establecimiento de albergues, el compromiso de EE.UU. con la recuperación será a "más largo plazo".

Clinton es desde hace casi dos años el enviado especial de las Naciones Unidas para Haití, lo que le hace tener especiales lazos con ese país y por eso se siente "especialmente afectado" por la situación.

Al igual que Bush, Clinton afirmó que pese a los retos, Haití "saldrá adelante".
